NDOSHIMILI FOR A REASON. NDOSHIMILI FOR A PURPOSE
By Daniel Ifeanyi Ogiriki, 22 December 2025.
Our forefathers chose the name Ndoshimili obviously for a reason and purpose, not just for the sake of just bearing a name. Indeed it is Ndoshimili for a reason and purpose. Ndoshimili means "people living on the Niger" (obviously referring to the River Niger). Today, based on knowledge, I can say without fear or favor that our forebarers chose the best part along the River Niger to live. This decision didn't come easily as they went through so many challenges to secure these Ndoshimili territories for themselves and their descendants, but Ndoshimili for a reason and purpose..
To buttress this point please join me in this voyage of history. I come from a place called "Onyamagbunimagu" but usually abbreviated to Onya, in ancient books and Onyah in recent books. The meaning of the full name of my hometown of Onyamagbunimagu is "the trap that killed the great animal (Tiger) for me." This goes to remind our people of Onyah kingdom and Ndoshimili people, that at the time their forebarers secured their present hometown, they had to learn to deal with and live with wild animals like the Tiger, Elephant , Hippopotamus, Crocodile and the rest. Ndoshimili for a reason and purpose.
Moving away from the territorial threat our forebarers had to go through to secure our present hometown is the hidden treasures of tourism attraction in every clan and community that makes up Ndoshimili land. In Onya kingdom of today, my forebarers chose the first bifurcation of the River Niger as part of their own territory. Today, Onya kingdom is home to the first bifurcation of River Niger which gave birth to River Forcadoes and River Nun. This first bifurcation of River Niger in Onya kingdom is of particular interest because it is the beginning of the finger like structure that gave the name Delta, where Niger Delta as a name was derived from (Delta Plus River Niger gives you Niger-Delta as a name). #NdoshimiliForAReason

Moving forward, the emptying of the Ase Creek into the River Niger is located in Ase Kingdom of Ndoshimili land (Maybe this is how the creek derived her name as Ase Creek). Today, of all the wild animals that our forebarers had to deal with, the most prevalent is the crocodile. Today, we no longer hear about crocodile killing people in Ndoshimili land, that does not mean that in the past, crocodile didn't fight our forebarers. As we speak, crocodile is a sacred diety that must not be killed in Okpai kingdom and Beneku community while other kingdoms and communities in Ndoshimili land have them in abundance but have learnt to deal with this very aggressive reptile. Indeed, it is Ndoshimili for a reason and purpose.
Every clan, Kingdom and communities in Ndoshimili land have their lakes which is filled with various rare species and are usually fished every year depending on their location on Ndoshimili land. I won't be fair to my Ndoshimili people without talking about the regular/annual flooding of Ndoshimili land. It is an established fact that the River Niger will always overflow its bank annually. Yes our forebarers had to deal with this occurrence and left their descendants with the practice of farming a particular land every year with no rotational farming as a result of the regular flooding of Ndoshimili farmland. The flood over the years have become a laughing stock against the Ndoshimili people but our people have always lived with it over the years. Indeed it was not Ndoshimili by mistake but Ndoshimili for a reason and purpose.
Indeed it was not by mistake but deliberately
