STATEMENT CONDEMNING PIPELINE VANDALISM AND CALLING FOR UNITY IN THE NIGER DELTA

The recent explosion on the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP) in Rivers State is a grave concern, underscoring the persistent challenges of pipeline vandalism and its detrimental impact on our nation's economy and environmental health.

The Niger Delta has a storied history of struggle and resilience, leading to significant milestones such as the Presidential Amnesty Programme, derivation proceeds, the establishment of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and community-based surveillance initiatives. These achievements are the result of collective efforts and sacrifices aimed at ensuring the region's development and inclusion.

It is imperative that we do not allow individuals with personal ambitions to jeopardize these hard-earned gains. The Senate has proactively established an Ad-Hoc Committee on Crude Oil Theft, chaired by Senator Ned Nwoko, to address these pressing issues. The committee is engaging international experts to track illegal vessels and implement digital financial tracking systems to enhance transparency within Nigeria's oil sector. All this is to ensure our ancestors blessings on us work for the people’s of the Niger Delta and not be a curse for conflicts and pollution and instability.

Looking ahead, our long-term objectives include advocating for greater inclusion of the Niger Delta people in the energy sector through the establishment of modular refineries and the consideration of a dedicated agency to oversee the unique challenges of crude oil theft and pipeline surveillance. These initiatives aim to empower local communities and ensure sustainable development.

Dialogue has been the cornerstone of our progress. We must continue to engage constructively, condemning acts of vandalism that threaten our collective advancement. The recent appointment of a caretaker administrator in Rivers State is a step towards stabilizing Rivers State, amidst current challenges.

We call upon all stakeholders to cooperate fully during this transitional period. Unity and collaboration over the next six months are crucial to restoring stability and ensuring that the state remains on the path of progress. Let us work together to protect our shared interests and build a prosperous future for the Niger Delta.

Hon. Gloria Okolugbo
