ANIOMA PEOPLE: VICTIMS OF MARGINALIZATION UNDER SHERIFF OBOREVWORI'S PDP GOVERNMENT
By Timothy Okorakpa
Maria Udofia, the convener of Non-Indigenous Residents in Anioma (NIRA), has publicly criticized the Delta State government, led by the People's Democratic Party (PDP) under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, for its systematic marginalization of Delta North Senatorial District, which is home to the Anioma people. In an exclusive interview with The Sun News, she expressed her unwavering commitment to shedding light on the injustices faced by her community.
Addressing the issue of marginalization, Maria boldly stated, “The Anioma people are indeed marginalized. I was brought up with the Urhobo cultures, I speak out without fear. Since the emergence of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori's PDP administration, the treatment of Delta North has drastically changed.”
She elaborated on the disparities in resource allocation, emphasizing, “The services and amenities provided to Delta North, where the Anioma people reside, are starkly different from those in other districts. Anyone who disputes this should come forward – I'm ready to explain precisely how we are being marginalized.”
When asked what actions the current government could take to rectify this situation, Maria highlighted the urgent need for balanced project execution. “It is essential for the government to assess contracts and project implementation fairly,” she asserted. “It is unacceptable that Delta Central has ongoing projects valued over three hundred billion naira, while Delta North has not been allocated even a single project worth one billion naira by the PDP-led administration.”
She continued, “Regardless of who holds the positions of governor, deputy governor, secretary to the government, or speaker of the House of Assembly, every political leader should ensure that Delta North is represented with at least one significant project worth billions. Such inequity is not only an injustice but also undermines the principle of good governance."
Maria Udofia's call for action serves as a rallying cry for all Anioma individuals to speak out against the marginalization they face under Governor Oborevwori's regime. It is vital that the concerns of the Anioma people are acknowledged and addressed, ensuring equitable treatment and opportunities for all districts within Delta State.
